Hey all who are reading this blog - This is my story so far........

I am 34y.o and have struggled with my weight for most of my life - growing up i was always overweight, i was the chubby baby that turned into the fat little girl who grew up into the overweight teenager and then adult.

I remember the first ever diet i ever went on - It was at the end of Grade 6 - Mum took me to the family doctor and he suggested i counted calories (yuk!) He said i should stick to 1000 a day, so i bought a calorie counting book and over the 6 week break before i entered Yr 7 at high school i successfully lost about 3kg. Well it pretty much went on from there - throughout my teens i lost weight and then put it back on again. I had periods of time when i looked really good - at my 21st I weighed 80kg and looked pretty good (some of you may think that is a lot but i was and still am 178cm tall). But then i put it back on again - i lost that weight through WW. I was always a successful dieter when i put my mind to it - but the one thing i was not successful at was keeping the weight off. I went back to WW many times but it wasnt until May 2003 when i weighed 104kg and a few of my friends at work decided to try WW for the first time that i decided to re-join for a third time!!!  I started at 104kg and within 6 months (around late Dec 2003) I had reached my WW goal of 78kg. I continued this weight loss till i reached 74kg a few months later. That was early 2004.

It's now July 2007 and I currently weigh 79kg. I found it was too hard to maintain my weight at 74kg and slowly have put back on 5kg. My weight now fluctuates anywhere between 77kg and 80kg. When it gets up around 80kg i get my act together and try to watch my eating and do some more exercise. I would love to be 75kg to be truthful but am happy when i weigh 78kg.

Many people ask me what my secret was and how did i lose the weight and finally keep it off. To be honest the only thing i can attribute my success to is - exercise. I was pretty mad when i was first losing the weight - although i was overweight most my life i was always active - as a kid i did gymnastics (i know not the best choice of sport for a fatty) then i was always joining gyms and started up at Karate in 2002. But when i started losing the weight i had bought a treadmill and walked on it for an hour a day. That continued...... until i was walking for an hour in the morn and another hour in the evening. I then started to run on it. In Dec 2003 i entered my first ever fun run - Sussans classic in St Kilda - Melbourne. It was 5km and i actually jogged the whole distance. It went from there - i entered as many as i could and at one point was running 8km runs. I am still doing them now but stick to the 4-5km runs, the latest one was the Run to the G last month (5km). I have even done triathlons. I continued with Karate till i got my first Dan black belt. I am now involved in badminton and volleyball and have just joined the gym again.

So my weight loss has occurred due mainly to my motivation about exercise - It produces positive endorphines and that makes you feel good about yourself and your achievements and allows you to continue to maintain the weight loss.

Why is it then that i was able to keep the weight off this time around and not all the other times even though i was active back then too?  Good bloody Q, sorry i cannot answer that? But someone wise said to me once that it was just the right time in my life - my body was ready to be and stay healthy.

Well thats my story so far.........I want to get back down to 75kg so will keep you informed on my progress. Hope you enjoyed reading my story.

Kathryn.

I really enjoyed reading your story! Thanks!

I guess I am the stage you described in your story just before you finally got serious about the exercise. I do a lot more exercise now than I have ever done, but my weight is sitting around th 70kg mark... I would really love it to be around the 60 kg mark. I know 10 kilos shouldn't be that hard to lose, but I seem to keep coming up to hurdles. I think consistency is the key for me to achieving my goals. I am very determined when I really put my mind to a task, so I just need to stay focussed and I should succeed!

Having help along the way is going to be a huge help though!

Again, thanks for publishing your story. Now it's time to spend some quality time with my treadmill!

Hi there, new buddy... loved reading your story, thanks for sharing it.  I too love exercise and I regret not getting involved with any sport on a regular basis as a teenager/young adult - although I do like tennis and now we are fortunate enough to have our very own tennis court at our new place.  Winter is out of the question though as it's very slippery.  I love Body Jam (dance aerobic - funk, hip hop, latin) and usually do two classes per week at my local YMCA (Endeavour Hills) plus a Body Pump or Body Balance class and I've just tried Body Attack.  My previous gym offered Belly Dance classes and they were fun, empowering (in a female goddess kind of way! ;) and a great core strength exercise!  I've just found out there is a class not too far away from me in Berwick, so I'll get onto it!

Great idea getting involved with fun runs - good on you!  Where in Melbourne do you live?

Yes, I think that will be my secret to success too - just constant exercise - but also, once getting to goal weight again, getting on top of any extra kilos pronto!  My mum does exactly that and has always been slim.  She grazes a lot too and doesn't eat much in one go.

I couldn't find your photos - did you say they're on a main photo page?  i'll post some too soon.

Wel, bye for now.  Keep up the good work and good luck getting back down to 75kg - you can do it!   (I'm only 160cm so 60kg is ideal for me - but 72kg is acceptable.  Im 81kg (still) at the moment and have re-started the Celebrity Slim diet this week, after a couple of illnesses and setbacks... but I'll get there, just like you did!)

warm regards,

Nita / lotuslady
