Beautiful orchids blooming everywhere. Let's just take a sniff, shall we? Deep breath, now... Yikes. Peee yewww.
Guess we picked the wrong orchid.
Of the thousands of orchids that ReplicaDKNY Watches will be on display at the Orchid Show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden over the weekend, most will have a delightfully sweet scent or no perceptible perfume at all. We just happened to pick one of the few that could be described as having a scent reminiscent of rotten meat - unless you're a pollinator, that is. To a bee, that rank ripeness smells like Chanel No. 5.
FakeHermes Handbags Scent can play such an important role in the life of an orchid, in fact, that a fragrance category has been added to the judging at this year's show. Joanna Eckstrom, a member of the Massachusetts Orchid Society, which is presenting the show, explains: "Orchid scents range from delightfully sweet to sickeningly fetid. Orchid scents `turn on' at different times of day to attract their pollinators."
If you decide to make a beeline to the show, hours are 1 to 5 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Tower Hill, 11 French Drive, Boylston (Exit 24 off Route 290). Orchid vendors from across the country will offer a wide variety of plants, orchid supplies and even some Clipon charms orchid-inspired jewelry. There will be informational displays and lots of orchid enthusiasts and experts eager to share their knowledge.
The show and its associated programs are free with garden admission, which is $10 for adults; $7 seniors; $5 youths ages 6 to 18; and free for children younger than 6. Also, artist Tom Kellner, a participant in the current sculpture show at Tower Hill, will do a Halloween mask-making program for kids from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at no additional charge.
