Note 17 - Loss of over 38 Pounds
DATE: 10/21/2007 03:38:55 / MOOD: other

Just to add that my loss of apx 18 kilos, equates to the loss of over 38 pounds.  I was a size 16 but have lost atleast two dress sizes, being size 12 now.  This morning though, I did put on a pair of jeans that my daughter used to wear, and they are actually a size 10 - I'm just fitting them.  Maybe they're a bigger size 10, anyway, I know I'm heading down to size 10 and so soon, I would have lost 3 dress sizes.  Now remember, there is NO way I could have done this diet without me first making the promise to God - I just would not have done it otherwise.  There would only be one other way that I could have done a diet like this, and that would have been to have a personal trainer/coach, you know.  But since I never had the money for long enough to go on that path, the Promise To God Diet was the only other way I could achieve weight loss.  I set the time.  I set the menu.  I set the portions - then I promise to God that I'll stick to it for as long as I've promised Him that I would.  There's no motivating myself involved.  I make the promise, then that's it - I stick to the diet.  I almost have felt at times as if I am 're-mothering' myself on more correct eating behaviours.  It's like I'm setting the rules and then sticking to them without chucking a fit on the floor like a child sometimes does when they're trying to get their own way.  I'm re-educating myself on food.  The best thing about this diet is that it's flexible.

Note 16 - Promise To God Diet - Loss of 18 Kilos
DATE: 10/21/2007 03:18:20 / MOOD: other

Today I weighed 57.3 kilos.  I started out as 75.0 or maybe a little over (I can't remember) but pretty much I've almost lost about 18 kilos - I don't know at this point how much that is in pounds.  My goal weight was 55 kilos because that's what I remember I was one day years ago and I know I was at that time, more my correct body weight.

At this time, I'm on a 3 week bit of a crash diet - no, I wouldn't normally go on one, but atleast I've given it a time frame.  I'm having an orange a day - very filling with vitamin C and fibre I believe, with a few spoons of yoghurt (calcium) and then I have my chocolate milk and fruit juice.  That's it, and I don't get hungry, which is surprising even me.  Even though I was losing weight on my regular diet, it was taking a while for my stomach to go down so this is why I'm on this current temporary diet, and it's working at a fast pace.

I still would like at times the foods I used to eat, but in the future I will be more mindful of portion size.  It's so easy to over eat and eat much more than you need, hence, it's very easy to become overweight.  I thought about it the other day, when we invest in being more careful with the amount that we eat, we are investing in something 'higher' - our aims and objectives and goals are higher at that point in time.  High investment - high return.  Low investment - low return.  When you eat and eat and eat until you see there's no more chips in the packet - this is a low investment.  If you don't know how much you're going to eat until you've finished eating, that's got to be a low investment.

Before, I'd eat what I wanted, and as much of it as I wanted, as many times as I wanted it and it showed on my body.  I invested low in keeping my body in shape and my body reflected my choices.  Low investment - low return.  Now, I'm making a high investment and getting a high return.  I'm not used to being this thin, but I can get used to it.  When I get to about 55 kilos I'll see if I can post another up to date photo of me on this site next to another 'before' photo so you can see the difference.

ps. I had to cut right down the peanut butter and hazelnut spread I was having - it was getting out of hand.  I have smaller portions of those now (on my regular diet).

Note 15 - Promise To God Diet - Loss of 15 Kilos
DATE: 10/03/2007 23:27:54 / MOOD: other

As of 4th October 2007, almost 6 months after beginning this diet, I've lost 15 kilos.    I used to be 75 kilos, and now I'm 60 kilos and still losing.  If I didn't promise God I'd do this diet, there would be no way that I would have lasted on it for this long.  I couldn't have lost 15 kilos without the promise.  No amount of enthusiasm or motivation could have got me this far.  For me, it's not an everyday 'okay, I've got to be motivated to do this diet again today,'it's more like; I made up the main promise almost 6 months ago - my decision was way back then - I just stick to it now, no matter what.

I've cut right back on the peanut butter too.  I was having just over 2 tablespoons worth I think a day, but I don't think my body was using all that energy, and it's possibly why my stomach hasn't gone down yet.  I have only a half of a tablespoon of peanut butter now a day - starting yesterday.  I was also having too much hazelnut spread, so I've cut back on that too, to 1 tablespoon of hazelnut spread a day.  I'm going back to jam and honey.  Now I had to promise God that I wouldn't have any more peanut butter or hazelnut spread than what I said until the last day of this year, otherwise - there'd be NO way I'd stick to it.

Note 14 - 14 Kilos Lost in 24 Weeks

Promise To God Diet -  WeightsUPDATE

In 24 and a half weeks I lost 14.2 kgs (31.24 lbs).

I was 75.0 kgs on 9 April 2007, and now I'm 60.8 kgs. This morning I was considering taking the peanut butter off of my diet ,and you know, once it's off, I can't put it back on again until the first of January 2008 - 'cause that's what I've promised.  So just as well I did a bit of research on the internet about it - it's all pretty good.  To name some, peanut butter has protein, zinc, calcium, magnesium and folate in it.  They gave dieters the okay and go ahead basically to include it in their diets, saying that it had all of the daily vitamins and minerals that you need in it . The only thing is the portion.  They recommend no more than 2 tblspns a day which is possibly about what I have now.  I'm still going to continue to lose weight.  I'm going to end up being that particular weight that this diet will naturally take me to.  I'm just assuming that that particular weight will be around 55-57 kilos.  It will be interesting to see which weight this diet will take me to.

Note 13 - My Daily Weights
DATE: 09/04/2007 20:40:18 / MOOD: other

This diet I'm on is the Promise To God Diet - I made it up.

I simply took all of the information I've learned over the years and wrote out a diet that I thought would be a good diet to be on that would cause me to lose weight.  And it has.  I've been on this diet I created for apx. 20/21 weeks and I've lost 11 kilos so far.  This is the most sensible diet I have ever put myself on and it is the most controlled.  I know exactly what I'm doing - I'm tracking my weight progress and I know how to maintain it when I finally reach my goal.

Now, my goal weight is around 55-57 kilos apx, only because I remember years ago when I wasn't really on a sensible diet, and it wasn't controlled and I didn't know how to maintain it - but when I was around that weight, I noticed that for me, it was a good weight for me to be.   Having said that, what I'm eating now will actually determine what weight I will end up being once I get there.  I'm just assuming that what I'm eating at this point will take me down to 55-57 kilos.  So what I'm eating now every day, will ultimately determine in the end, what my end weight will be.

After defining what I could and wouldn't eat and drink, I simply made a promise to God that I would stick to that diet for a certain period of time.  I began on 9th April 2007 and promised God that I'd stay on it until the last day of this year.  It's my Promise To God Diet 'experiment.'   It's as simple as that.  I knew that no matter what the diet, (and I'd tried different ways of dieting including my own ideas), I wouldn't stick to it for long.  Diets for me last no more than 5 weeks to a couple of months apx and after that I revert back to past eating habits.  If I didn't promise God that I'd stick to this diet, there's no way that I'd still be on it - I would have only have lasted a few weeks or something.  The main thing that keeps me on this diet is the literal promise I made to God that I would stick to it for a certain period of time.  Because I don't always have the discipline to stick to a diet, I had to 'lock' myself in by promising to God that I'd do this diet for as long as I promised.  Without that promise, I'd be 75 kilos again.

I knew that I had to make a sure commitment to choose a diet then stick to it - atleast for a certain amount of time.  I knew that if I promised God that I'd stick to it, I would, and I have.  My rule is, I can take something off of my diet menu, but I can't add anything to it - so I have to be careful, because what I promise - I have to stick to.

I just finished a three week period of not having any bread on my diet - just to see if it actually would make a difference.  Now three weeks isn't long and no, it didn't make a difference to my weight, I believe.  So, the bread's now back on the diet.  The following is a basic list of what I eat every day and I have to say, I don't eat breakfast or lunch - but that isn't part of my diet - I haven't been eating breakfast or lunch for years, so, yeah;

1 x 125ml container of dried fruit

2 slices of (canned) pineapple

4 dessert spoons of yoghurt

400ml milk with 4 tspn Sustagen & 4 tspn Chocolate powder

400ml fruit juice

1 fish fillet in butter or oil

4 slices of beetroot

7 green olives

2 spoons black sliced olives

2 spoons peas

2 spoons beans (and sometimes it was diced tomato)

3 champignons or some sliced mushroom

15 gr cheese (weighed)

4 tspns spring onion dip

1 slice bread (I can choose the thickness and any spread)

That's it - it's a bit sparce, but in the beginning I actually had a hot chocolate and a second sweet drink on there and double the cheese and some whipped cream, but I took those off because I was impatient to lose weight.  Instead of fish I could choose a can of smoked oysters or 2 eggs, boiled or fried - or 250ml mince or chicken and potato was part of the vegetables.  Then I began to only count out 12 oysters,  though I should have stuck with the whole can, and I took away one egg and regretted it.  (Remember, I can take things off, but I can't put them back on again, so I have to be careful.)

I took the mince and chicken off the diet (too late now) and there was also a pie in place of the fish, which I took off too.    (  Notto worry, it all ends on the last day of this year.)  But I'm over it now and am okay with continuing on with what I've left myself on this diet.  I've learned.

So, my original Promise To God Diet was actually more sensible you could say because it gave me more options.  I've realised it's nice to have options.  There's another thing I've learned also like, when I do a Promise To God Diet, only do it for 1 month at a time, then revise it for the following month.  That way I don't have to wait so long before revising it.  I already have written out my Promise To God Diet for the month of January 2008 - it looks a bit like my original Promise To God Diet but with some portions a bit bigger.

For example - the yoghurt portion will double, (understandable) the hot chocolate goes back on ,theextra sweet drink goes on again, the second egg makes a comeback, the milk stays the same, the fruit juice portion remains, the bread becomes two slices, the smoked oysters become a whole can again, the mince and chicken make a return with a little more this time.  Potato chips will make a debut with apx 7 of those and a certain amount of grams of chocolate will be added also - even if it's just one or two chocolate pieces.  I'll be adding a second piece of fruit to the fruit category and just a little more vegetables.  35ml of nuts will go on the diet as well.

I weigh myself every morning (forgot two mornings)

AndItrack myself on a graph - which I think is a really good idea for this site to have.  A graph to track individual's daily or weekly weights.  It would be great to see that facility on this site as part of a person's Page.  The following are my daily weights to date:

Note 12 - Portion Aware - Portion Committed
DATE: 09/04/2007 20:33:40 / MOOD: other

Just thought I'd comment on a couple of things I've really been aware of during my diet.  It's Portion Aware and Portion Committed.  I haven't heard of these specific terms before and thought it was a good idea to identify these two things.  Portion Aware I will simply put it, is to understand what is recognised by say, a nutritionist (or the serving suggestion on a food packet/box.)  So, you know what a sensible sized portion is.  For example, you're aware that the different foods you partake of, on or off a diet, are of a certain sized portion - usually a small portion or a sensible portion - you're aware of what size the portion of food should be - but this doesn't make you Portion Committed.  If you're not portion committed, you'll ignore the suggested serving size/portion and basically eat as much as you like - perhaps consuming 4, 5 or 6 portions of that one particular food item.  You're portion aware, but not portion committed (for one reason or another.)

To be portion committed, you know what sized portion is the 'right' one/size, and you eat that one portion only - you're committed to sticking to the suggested serving suggestion or the nutritionist's advice.

To be not portion aware is to think that maybe 3 servings of some food is actually, in fact, one serving.

Thought I'd broach the subject there.  I've become very portion aware and portion committed to most foods, but having said that, I do layer on the spreads on my bread and my bread is cut thick.  So in that area, I'm portion aware - but not portion committed.

(And therein lays the contradiction)

Note 11 - Promise To God Diet - Splash Chart
DATE: 07/31/2007 22:50:44 / MOOD: other

Today I weighed 64.4 kilos.

In 15 weeks I've lost 10 and a half kilos.

I've drawn up a graph chart with my daily weights on it.  Joining up the dots, it looks like a pattern waves make when they crash down on the sand.  The weight 'splashes' up but then it ends up going down further, an obvious pattern that has emerged from recording my daily weights.  I can see that although some days my weight goes up, it ultimately ends up going down even further which shows that my body is fighting a losing battle when it comes to hanging on to the fat cells.  I've got it at 100 gram intervals and the graph looks pretty extreme.  It's like watching the pattern of a 'fight' - it was almost 'sad' figuring it out at first.  No matter how much the 'splash' up climbed, the 'crash' down would go lower.  Good news for me though.

I also put a 'cap' on the peanut butter.  I was getting carried away and began putting about 2 cm's worth of peanut butter on my bread.  Well my limit is about half that amount now.  I cut my own slice of bread now, controlling how thick the slice will be.  Very glad about that.  I didn't actually stipulate how thick the 1 slice of bread could be, so, that's good for me.  I get to have more bread now, but apart from as thick as I'm cutting it now, I wouldn't actually want it any thicker - 2 cm's apx is enough.

Note 9 - Promise To God Diet - Anorexia Nervosa
DATE: 07/25/2007 23:16:43 / MOOD: other

I thought I'd just note that this type of 'diet' would be good for those with anorexia nervosa.  Straight up, these individuals are committed to eating less - that works with this diet.  They're also disciplined - when you think of it, they're very disciplined - going about the food intake, or lack of it, the wrong way.  But you take their determination to reach their goal (a better weight goal) and their discipline to stick at it, and they should end up being their correct body weight.  They could work it out with a nutritionist say, what to have on their diet.  They could make their choices.  I see them as very determined individuals who stick to their goal via even extreme measures.  They just need a better weight goal.  It's misguided food portion size and lack of understanding of how to maintain their correct body weight.  I think they need more information first on where their anorexia decisions will take them.  We know their goal is to be thin or slender; like a model perhaps - they're objectives leading to that goal are just unrealistic.

I saw one doctor or some authority endeavouring to make an anorexia nervosa individual eat something.  It was on tv and he was trying to tell her that burgers are okay and ice-creams good and all that.  I'm thinking; shouldn't he have started out with a more nutritional offering?  These are people who are very particular about what goes into their body.  At that point I reckon, it was a good time to start educating that person on what type of foods could get her to a healthier weight the healthy/healthier way.  These individuals seem to me to have the determination, discipline and committment, just not the right diet education and objectives.
